It was my first venture into Slovakia for a work assignment and the Kempinski Hotel River Park Bratislava was not a bad place to stay at. The intro on the hotels website says it well: Arrivals by boat, helicopter or private limousine … Assistance in organizing VIP tickets for your favorite events … Last-minute dry-cleaning or tailoring services … Assistance in adapting your travel plans … Complimentary transfer to the city center in our Rolls Royce or BMW limousines … Our concierge is there to assist you with anything you need… 24h a day… 7 days a week. This hotel forms part of the Global Hotel Alliance.

The Room

My company had booked a Plaza View Room which had a view of a skating rink in the plaza. The size of the room is 35 square meters (377 sq. ft.) and has a king bed and living room. The room has a long entrance with the bathroom immediately to the left and leads into the main sleeping area.

The bathroom was medium sized with a large bathtub, separate rainfall shower and enclosed toilet. The layout is well designed with special lighting and dimmers but what stood out was the temperature controls embedded in the marble both in the tub and shower. I now know that my perfect temperature is 36.5 degrees Celsius.

The room had water bottles with the biggest mouths I’ve seen – a bit disproportionate if you ask me… I enjoyed the large 50” television although it glitched and froze up a couple of times. As in most high end hotels there are slippers, robes, flashlights and an umbrella.

The Property

The Kimpenski is located next to the River Danube and in short walking distance to multiple restaurants. There is 1 restaurant on site, the Restaurant River Bank, which has French cuisine and was awarded with a Gault&Millau 2014 rating. I only used the restaurant for breakfast and I was disappointed with the small selection of food. There are the usual eggs and bacon with some cereals, yogurts and a few fruit drinks but overall a very weak spread.

The spa and fitness facilities are located on the last enclosed floor. There is a selection of massages, treatments and a cosmetic spa. The equipment in the gym was relatively new and well maintained and there are at least around 50 machines for all types of muscle groups and aerobic workouts. The outdoor pool is also located on the same floor and was a good 25 meters long.

The top floor is where you can land your helicopter or if you decide to arrive by boat there’s a dock out front. The lobby entrance is spacious and well decorated with marble, a small fireplace, and plenty of seating.

The Experience

The staff was friendly and the service was great although a bit forced. The hotel offers a “shuttle” service to the city center, old town or shopping malls – a Rolls Royce Phantom! My first time in one and I rather enjoyed it. Overall, for the price this Kempinski is relatively good value. The city center is about 10 minutes and the old town is only a short 5 minute taxi ride.

The Good: Gym well equipped; Rolls Royce Transfers! Normal Nightly Cost: $258 EUR – My Cost: Company Paid

The Bad: Breakfast was weak.

The Ugly: Nothing.
