GTHQ Jaunt Journal – Hotel: Intercontinental Bangkok – Bangkok, Thailand

Location: 973 Ploen Chit Road, Bangkok, 10330, Thailand; Sky train stop/shopping malls – 5 min walk

Sawatdee! Our last destination for an overnight stay was Bangkok! We stayed at the Intercontinental Bangkok which is one of IHG’s Category 6 properties. We departed Phnom Pend and arrived in the afternoon flying Thai Airways (review coming). We took the sky train since despite visiting Bangkok 3 times I had never experienced it. It was about 3 dollars and was clean and fast and our stop left us about 5 blocks from the hotel. I was impressed with the large entrance and sophisticated feel of the staff. They were very courteous and recognized my Ambassador Platinum status during check-in.

The Room

We had booked a King Bed Grande Deluxe Room but we received an upgrade to the Executive Deluxe Room due to my Platinum Ambassador status – although normally there are no upgrades for reward stays although this depends on the property. There is a long entranceway with garment closets to the right and the bathroom to the left. This leads straight into the room which is around 45 square meters (484 sq. ft.) and has a combined bed/living room. There is also a corner with an office desk with the usual amenities. In front of the bed is the 40” flat screen TV with enough room to either side to place your luggage. They use a BOSE sound system and have an ipod/iphone dock as well.

The bathroom is well designed and considered mid-sized. It is fitted in marble and tile with a bathtub and separate rainfall shower. The toiletries are the normal Intercontinental Agraria brand. Additionally, the room contains bathrobes, slippers, a mini bar, coffee and tea and an umbrella. We also received a welcome gift which was a couple of apples (woohoo!). There is also turndown service which I always welcome to freshen up the room.

The Property

There are 5 restaurants that cover Italian, French, Mediterranean, Thai, Chinese and Japanese. There are also 3 lounges including a humidor room. We didn’t actually eat since we went out on the town.

The spa has a plethora of treatments and packages as you can expect in Thailand. The fitness facilities were not huge but contained the basics and offered workout, yoga, aerobic, thai boxing classes and fitness instructors. There is also a sauna and whirlpool on the premises.

The outdoor pool is on one of the top floors and is designed with one glass wall and shaped into a small lagoon. There’s a small pool bar nearby and the pool is a few steps away from overlooking the main street nearby but there is a 2 meter glass wall protecting from any falls.

The hotel is connected to a shopping center and there are many ways to get to it. The business center is a good walk from the main lobby and it contained a few pc’s and a printer.

The Experience

We enjoyed our 1 night stay at this property. The staff was courteous and genuine.  We had 2 garments complimentarily laundered and the wifi was free due to our status with IHG. The hotel is located near the city center, excellent shopping, tailors and the Skytrain. The airport is a 30 minute Skytrain ride ($3 USD) or a 30-45 minute taxi ride (about $20 USD).

VIew from the top. Pool area

The Good: Good Location and staff; Nice pool; Normal Nightly Cost: $199.88 US/night – Our Cost: $0 US +30K IHG points (booked before IHG readjusted their property point rates – now 35K IHG points)

The Bad: Didn’t spend much time in the hotel so nothing to report.

The Ugly: Nothing was exceptionally negative.

  1. Nice review. I like the hardwood floor on that executive suite. In your opinion, is Ambassador membership worth the price/points?

    • In my opinion it is since they give you a free night certificate every year. This offsets the cost of the membership if used at a higher end property.
