GTHQ Jaunt Journal – Flight: United Airlines 787 Dreamliner – Economy

Route: Los Angeles (LAX) – Shanghai (PVG)

This is a review of the economy class on United’s 787 Dreamliner.  The differences between Economy, Business and First on the 787 are similar to United’s other long haul flights (greater than 8 hours). This review will look at the plane in general and specifically from an economy passenger perspective.

The Interior

United has added a touch of class to their service with the 787 Dreamliner.  Simply put, the new planes have an exciting feel. Upon arrival you receive a complimentary deck of playing cards, unusual for economy class tickets.

787 vs 747 Window Comparison

The large windows are almost two times the size of the 747.  They are dimmable windows with no window shade.  This allows lighting on the entire airplane to be synchronized with the dimmable LED lights.  In the case of my day flight the plane simulates twilight.  Even though the windows do not go completely black it’s more than enough to rest and I find it more relaxing then completely black window shades.  However, the windows are dark enough when the cabin lights are dimmed.  I’ve never felt more relaxed on a long haul flight. The photo on the far right was taken when the sun was at its noon day peak.

The plane sports a new air system that means more humidity and air pressure equivalent to 6000 feet instead of the industry standard 8000.  I didn’t think this was a big deal.  However, after a biology 101 review and taking a flight on the 787 this feature should not be undermined as it significantly adds to the comfort of this plane on long haul flights.

The overhead bins are larger then the 747 and all coach seat receive equal recline and leg room (32” left).

The Seats

The exception is sporadic Economy Plus which gets you (36” right) for a premium.  I’m 5’11” and personally, I would rather spend $150 extra to fly Economy on the 787 before I spend $150 for Economy Plus on a 747.

The Food

Due to the long haul we were offered 3 meals. The first meal was chicken and rice. This was followed four hours later by a cheese and ham sandwich.  An hour before landing, breakfast included an omelet, fruit and a yogurt. This is in line with the normal meals United serves across their overnight flights.

The Good: You feel significantly less drained after a long flight compared to any other long haul plane.

The Bad: No noticeable increase in leg room compared with other United long haul planes.

The Ugly: None
